Italy urges unified EU representation in Russia talks on Ukraine war

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called for the European Union to speak with a single voice in any negotiations with Russia aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, stressing that smaller groups of countries should not act as substitutes for the entire bloc.

Addressing lawmakers in Rome, Meloni emphasized that Europe needs a unified and legitimate representation in high-level diplomatic efforts. She argued that no limited coalition of states has the authority to represent the European Union as a whole in discussions concerning the conflict.

Her remarks come after the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany—known informally as the E3 group—recently met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to express support for Kyiv’s proposal for ceasefire talks with Moscow.

While reaffirming Italy’s strong support for Ukraine, Meloni insisted that any diplomatic engagement with Russia must be coordinated at the European level. She stressed the importance of avoiding fragmented approaches that could weaken the EU’s international position.

The Italian prime minister also stated that Europe should appoint an authoritative representative with a clear mandate from all EU member states to lead negotiations or diplomatic contacts related to the war. According to her, such coordination is essential to ensure coherence and credibility in international diplomacy.

Meloni further underlined the need for closer cooperation between the European Union and the United States in efforts to build a sustainable peace framework for Ukraine. She described this transatlantic coordination as challenging but necessary in the current geopolitical context.

Her comments are expected to feed into discussions ahead of the upcoming EU summit and the G7 leaders’ meeting, where the war in Ukraine and broader security issues are set to remain key priorities.

Analysts note that the debate reflects ongoing tensions within Europe over how foreign policy decisions should be coordinated, particularly in response to major international crises.
