Italian toddler dies after complications from damaged donor heart
A two-year-old boy in Italy has died following complications linked to a damaged donor heart, prompting a wide-ranging investigation into possible medical negligence and transport errors surrounding the transplant in Naples.
The child, identified as Domenico, had been born with a congenital heart defect and had waited months for a suitable donor organ. Shortly before Christmas, a compatible heart became available. However, according to hospital officials and media reports, the organ was improperly cooled during transportation, leading to severe damage before it was implanted.
Instead of being preserved at the recommended temperature of approximately 4 degrees Celsius, the donor heart reportedly came into contact with dry ice at around minus 80 degrees, effectively freezing the tissue. Despite the complications, surgeons proceeded with the transplant because the child’s own heart had already been removed.
Domenico remained hospitalized for nearly two months, much of that time in a coma and dependent on life support while awaiting the possibility of another transplant. Doctors ultimately determined that a second operation would not succeed, as his clinical condition had deteriorated and other organs, including his kidneys, were failing. He died in intensive care after what the hospital described as a sudden and irreversible decline.
The case has drawn national attention, with public outrage growing after the boy’s family said they were not fully informed about the circumstances that led to the failed transplant. His mother told Italian media she intends to establish a foundation in her son’s memory and called for stronger safeguards to prevent similar tragedies.
Authorities have opened a criminal investigation involving several doctors and paramedics. The transport container used to carry the organ has been seized as part of the inquiry. The hospital has also launched an internal review, and the medical team involved has been temporarily suspended from performing further heart transplants pending the outcome.
