Italian authorities seize 435 kg of cocaine worth €70 million

Italian border police announced on Wednesday the seizure of more than 435 kilograms of high-purity cocaine at the port of Gioia Tauro, in southern Italy, dealing a significant blow to international drug trafficking networks.

According to authorities, the narcotics were hidden inside a shipment of approximately 1,000 bags of peanuts originating from Latin America and bound for Eastern Europe. The illicit cargo, discovered in the Calabria region, is estimated to be worth over 70 million euros on the black market.

Investigators highlighted the crucial role played by specialized sniffer dog units during the operation. The dogs detected irregularities in the shipment, prompting a detailed inspection that led to the discovery of the drugs.

Police officials stated that the seizure represents a major setback for the criminal organization behind the operation. Since the beginning of the year, law enforcement agencies have confiscated more than five tonnes of illegal drugs at the port of Gioia Tauro alone, with an estimated total value of around 650 million euros, underlining the port’s strategic importance in the fight against drug smuggling.
