Israel strikes Houthi-controlled power facility in Yemen

Israel’s military confirmed on Sunday that it had carried out airstrikes on what it described as a Houthi-controlled energy facility in Sanaa, Yemen’s capital. The operation, conducted around 04:00 local time, was presented as a response to repeated missile and drone attacks launched by the Houthis against Israel.

According to Israeli authorities, the strikes targeted infrastructure “used by the Houthi terrorist regime,” which they accuse of operating under Iranian direction and financing. A statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) emphasized that the attack, conducted nearly 2,000 kilometers from Israeli territory, aimed to eliminate threats against Israel and its citizens.

Local sources in Sanaa reported significant damage at a power station but confirmed there were no casualties. Houthi media condemned the strikes, calling them an “aggression” against civilian infrastructure.

The Houthis, backed by Iran, have intensified their missile and drone operations in recent months, justifying them as acts of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Since the October 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel, the ongoing war in Gaza has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and a dire humanitarian crisis.

Israel has previously launched several retaliatory strikes in Yemen, targeting areas under Houthi control, including ports and Sanaa’s airport.
