Israel intercepts new Gaza-bound flotilla off the coast of Cyprus
A new flotilla headed toward Gaza was intercepted by Israeli naval forces in waters near Cyprus, according to organizers of the mission. The vessels had reportedly departed from Turkey earlier in the week.
The flotilla, organized under the name Global Sumud Flotilla, stated on social media that military ships approached their convoy and that Israeli forces boarded at least one of the boats during the operation.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions in the region, where maritime attempts to reach Gaza have repeatedly faced interception by Israeli authorities, who argue such missions are unauthorized and pose security risks.
Organizers of the flotilla described the operation as a humanitarian effort aimed at drawing international attention to the situation in Gaza. They reported that communication with some of the vessels was disrupted during the interception.
Israeli naval operations in the Eastern Mediterranean have increased amid broader regional instability linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Authorities maintain that maritime blockades are necessary to prevent unauthorized shipments to Gaza.
The flotilla’s interception is expected to trigger renewed diplomatic reactions and public debate over freedom of navigation, humanitarian access, and security enforcement in the region.
