Israel Calls for Evacuations as Airstrikes Intensify in Lebanon
The Israeli military has urged civilians in southern Lebanon to evacuate areas near Hezbollah positions as it escalates its bombing campaign against its northern neighbor, signaling the potential onset of a broader military operation.
According to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency, Israel conducted over 80 airstrikes.
"The IDF will carry out extensive, precise strikes against terror targets widely dispersed throughout Lebanon," stated Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
This evacuation warning marks the first of its kind issued by the IDF regarding Lebanon, with an Israeli military official informing NBC News that the current operations are limited to aerial strikes.
The official emphasized Israel's goal to establish safe conditions for its citizens to return to northern areas and to dismantle Hezbollah’s infrastructure.
"We need to bring our citizens back home," Israeli President Isaac Herzog told Sky News on Sunday, describing the situation as dangerous with significant potential for escalation, attributing the conflict's onset to Hezbollah.
Since the terrorist attack on October 7 and the subsequent Israeli bombardment of Gaza, Israel and Hezbollah, backed by Iran, have engaged in reciprocal rocket fire. While experts suggest that neither Israel nor Iran seeks a direct large-scale conflict, there are concerns that escalating military actions could inadvertently lead to one.
Approximately 60,000 people have been evacuated from over 40 northern communities in Israel due to the conflict, while more than 100,000 people in Lebanon have been displaced, according to the International Organization for Migration.
Hagari indicated that Hezbollah had been preparing to launch attacks on Israel, following a weekend marked by intense cross-border fire between the two entities.
He displayed a map during a video statement indicating various towns and villages in southern Lebanon that, according to him, Hezbollah has used to militarize civilian infrastructure.
Tensions escalated last week when devices belonging to Hezbollah members detonated in a significant Israeli operation. An airstrike on Friday resulted in at least 45 fatalities in a crowded Beirut suburb, including senior Hezbollah members and numerous civilians.
Hezbollah retaliated by launching a barrage of rockets toward Israel, marking one of its most extensive assaults since the conflict began. Although Israeli air defenses intercepted many of the 150 rockets, cruise missiles, and drones launched by Hezbollah, the IDF acknowledged some incidents where debris fell onto Israeli territory.
Additionally, the Israeli military is investigating reports regarding the possible death of Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader, in a recent airstrike. An Israeli official conveyed to NBC News that there is insufficient evidence to confirm or deny his death. Speculations arise from Israeli intelligence suggesting Sinwar has not communicated externally for several weeks, although there is no definitive proof of his demise.
