Islamic State Leader killed in joint U.S.-Nigeria operation, Trump says
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that American and Nigerian forces carried out a joint military operation that resulted in the death of a senior leader linked to the Islamic State in Nigeria.
According to statements released by the U.S. administration, the operation targeted Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, a militant figure described by American officials as one of the most active leaders associated with the extremist group. Trump stated that the mission was carefully planned and conducted in cooperation with Nigerian security forces.
The operation marks the second major U.S.-supported military intervention in Nigeria in recent months, reflecting growing international concern over insecurity and extremist violence in parts of the country. Nigerian authorities have not immediately provided detailed public comments regarding the operation.
The northeastern region of Nigeria has faced a long-running insurgency since 2009, involving several armed extremist groups operating across rural communities and border regions. The violence has led to thousands of deaths, mass displacement, and repeated humanitarian crises.
Security analysts note that militant organizations in the region continue to exploit poverty, weak infrastructure, and political instability to recruit fighters and expand their influence. International cooperation between African governments and foreign allies has increased in recent years to counter the threat of terrorism and improve regional security.
The United States had previously imposed sanctions on Abu-Bilal al-Minuki over alleged links to extremist activities and support networks connected to the Islamic State. Officials believe that removing senior militant figures could weaken operational planning and reduce the risk of future attacks.
At the same time, discussions continue regarding the broader causes of violence in Nigeria, including ethnic tensions, economic hardship, and conflicts affecting both Christian and Muslim communities.
