Iran conflict triggers mass tourism cancellations in eastern Mediterranean

The war in Iran sparks widespread tourism cancellations across the eastern Mediterranean, jeopardizing the region's vital summer season just weeks before launch. Cyprus suffers the hardest hit, with short-term rental cancellation rates jumping from 15% pre-conflict to 100% immediately after Iran's March 2 drone strike on the British RAF Akrotiri base, per U.S. tracker AirDNA data cited by Reuters. Rates eased to about 45% by March 21.

U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran began February 28 as Cyprus tourism emerged from winter lows. Iranian retaliatory strikes soon included a drone hit on the British base, prompting U.S. and UK travel alerts. The U.S. State Department raised Cyprus to Level 3 "Reconsider Travel" on March 3, while Britain's FCDO warned terrorism cannot be ruled out island-wide. Cyprus Hotel Association reports nearly 40% drops in March and April bookings, its director general said.

Low-cost carriers already see shifts reshaping European tourist flows. Jet2 CEO Steve Heapy noted at the airline's annual conference that bookings to Cyprus and Turkey dry up while cancellations rise and planes empty, with demand moving to Spain and Italy. EasyJet CEO Kenton Jarvis echoed the pattern: eastern Mediterranean loses appeal, western gains ground.

Greece feels pressure too, where summer visitors drive the economy. Aegean Airlines reports double-digit booking declines from Israel and Gulf states since conflict start. Greek tourism confederation SETE secretary general George Vernicos told Reuters of slowed advance bookings and softening demand from northern Europe and the U.S., though some rushed flights before oil-driven airfare hikes.

Cyprus saw a record 4.5 million visitors last year. Recovery hinges on conflict length. Jet2's Heapy stayed cautiously optimistic, urging preparation for quick end and strong rebound.
