Insurgent groups challenge Mali’s military government amid rising instability

Mali’s military-led government is facing renewed pressure after coordinated attacks by armed groups across the country raised fresh doubts about the state’s ability to restore stability.

Recent assaults targeted military positions, including a major army base near the capital Bamako, and resulted in significant casualties, including the reported death of the defence minister. Analysts describe the attacks as one of the most coordinated operations in recent years involving insurgent networks active in the Sahel region.

The situation highlights the growing influence of militant groups operating in Mali, particularly those linked to extremist movements that have expanded across West Africa’s Sahel corridor.

One of the most active groups is Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an organization affiliated with Al-Qaeda. The group emerged in 2017 through the merger of several armed factions and is led by Iyad Ag Ghaly, a former Tuareg rebel commander.

JNIM has developed strong operational capabilities in northern and central Mali, taking advantage of local grievances, weak state presence, and regional instability. Its fighters have reportedly operated close to Bamako, although experts say the group is not believed to have the capacity to seize the capital directly. Instead, its strategy appears focused on weakening state authority through sustained attacks and disruption.

Another key figure within the group is Amadou Koufa, who leads a faction rooted in central Mali. Together, these networks have expanded their influence by exploiting ethnic tensions and limited government control in rural areas.

Security analysts warn that the coordination between different armed factions signals a more complex and evolving insurgency landscape in the Sahel. Despite ongoing military operations, Mali continues to face significant challenges in restoring security and public trust.
