India: three sisters die by suicide after mobile phones are confiscated, raising online addiction concerns
Three sisters aged 12, 14, and 16 died by suicide in Ghaziabad, India, after their parents confiscated their mobile phones, highlighting growing concerns over the impact of online addiction among adolescents.
Local authorities confirmed that the girls jumped from the ninth-floor balcony of their apartment on Wednesday morning. Reports indicate that the sisters had been out of school for several years and spent most of their time on their phones, particularly watching South Korean dramas and playing online games.
Their father, Chetan Kumar, explained that the girls were deeply influenced by Korean pop culture, from dramas to music, and often expressed a desire to visit South Korea. Recently, he had restricted access to their phones and forbidden K-dramas and online games.
Experts warn that excessive exposure to digital content can have serious psychological consequences. In response, some Indian states, as well as countries such as Australia, France, and Spain, are considering or implementing restrictions on social media use for minors. The World Health Organization (WHO) officially recognizes “gaming disorder,” a condition marked by a loss of control over gaming that significantly impairs personal, social, educational, or occupational functioning over at least 12 months.
