Hérault couple loses more than €100,000 as home caregivers face trial

A couple in their eighties living in France’s Hérault department allegedly lost more than €100,000 over several months, with three people involved in their home care now facing allegations of financial misconduct.

The couple, aged 84 and 85, are believed to have lost €103,780 from their savings. The suspected scheme allegedly involved a woman who provided care to the pair, her partner and one of her colleagues.

The three suspects are due to stand trial in Montpellier in March 2027.

Savings allegedly diverted over several months

The couple had returned from Portugal to France in order to receive medical treatment and live closer to their children.

Both were suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, making them particularly vulnerable to financial exploitation, according to information cited from a police source.

Investigators suspect that people who had access to the couple through their home-care responsibilities took advantage of that position to divert money belonging to them.

The alleged losses accumulated over a period of several months before the extent of the financial damage came to light.

Care relationship at the centre of the case

The investigation focuses on individuals who were regularly present in the couple’s home and therefore had direct contact with them.

The alleged involvement of the main caregiver, her partner and a colleague raises questions about the safeguards surrounding vulnerable elderly people receiving assistance at home.

Cases involving financial abuse can be particularly difficult to detect because transactions may occur gradually and victims can sometimes struggle to identify or report irregularities themselves.

Three defendants to appear in court

The three people implicated in the case are expected to answer to the allegations before a court in Montpellier in March 2027.

The accusations remain allegations at this stage, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until a court establishes their guilt.

The case nevertheless highlights the risks faced by elderly people who depend on outside assistance while managing their finances and personal affairs.

A wider concern for vulnerable households

The alleged loss of more than €100,000 illustrates the potentially severe financial consequences when trust between vulnerable people and their caregivers is abused.

For families of elderly relatives, detecting unexplained withdrawals, unusual purchases or changes in financial behaviour can be an important warning sign.

In this case, the judicial process will now have to determine how the money disappeared, who was responsible and whether the alleged acts amounted to deliberate financial exploitation of the elderly couple.
