Gunshot fired inside Oslo shopping mall, suspect arrested
Norwegian police arrested a 19-year-old man on Monday after a gunshot was fired inside Storo Storsenter, a large shopping mall in northern Oslo, during the busy Christmas shopping season. Authorities briefly evacuated the complex as a precaution, but later confirmed that no injuries were reported.
The incident occurred in the morning when a single shot was fired into the ceiling using a rifle, according to the Oslo police. “There is nothing to suggest that he attempted to harm anyone,” police operations chief Tor Grøttum told local media. He also revealed that the suspect had called the police himself shortly before the shot was discharged.
Officers quickly secured the area, deploying significant resources including a police helicopter. A baseball bat and a knife were also found at the scene. Investigators believe the young man acted alone and have stated that he has no serious criminal record. His identity and potential motives have not been disclosed.
The mall reopened to the public later in the morning, with a small section cordoned off while police continue their investigations. Authorities say they will maintain a visible presence on-site to reassure shoppers during the holiday period.
