Groom killed by celebratory gunfire in Turkey

A young Turkish man was accidentally killed by a guest firing a gun in celebration at his wedding, the state news agency Anadolu reported Wednesday.

The 23-year-old groom died Wednesday morning from his injuries, a day after his marriage ceremony in a village in Giresun province, located along the Black Sea.

A relative by marriage, suspected of firing the fatal shot, was arrested, Anadolu added.

Accidents caused by celebratory gunfire are common in Turkey, where an estimated 40 million firearms are in circulation, most of them illegal, according to a local foundation.

Authorities reported that a similar incident occurred just last week in the neighboring province of Trabzon, where one person was killed and two others injured during a wedding celebration.
