Germany uses electronic bracelets to fight domestic violence

Germany is stepping up efforts to protect victims of domestic violence by proposing a law that would require perpetrators to wear electronic bracelets and attend anti-violence programs. The measure, announced by the Federal Ministry of Justice, aims to prevent repeat offenses and increase the safety of at-risk individuals.

Family courts would have the authority to mandate the use of electronic bracelets for perpetrators in “high-risk” situations, alerting potential victims whenever the offender comes too close. Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig highlighted the importance of taking stronger action against domestic violence, particularly to safeguard women. She cited successful experiences in Spain, noting that electronic monitoring can save lives.

The proposed legislation also includes mandatory conflict-resolution training for offenders, stricter penalties for violating protection orders, and expanded access for courts to firearm registries. Statistics reveal the urgency of the issue: nearly every minute, a woman in Germany is assaulted by her partner or ex-partner, and almost every two days, a man kills his current or former partner. Last year, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) recorded a record 266,000 domestic violence victims.
