GE Vernova Invests $10.2 Million in Xlinks' Ambitious Morocco-UK Power Project
In a groundbreaking move, GE Vernova, a leading energy company, has announced a $10.2 million investment in Xlinks' ambitious Morocco-UK power project. This strategic partnership highlights GE Vernova's commitment to accelerating the delivery and build-out of this landmark initiative, which aims to harness the vast potential of renewable energy sources.
The Morocco-UK power project, a bold undertaking by Xlinks, seeks to supply an impressive 3.6 gigawatts of clean power to the United Kingdom, meeting approximately 8% of the nation's current electricity needs. This significant output will be achieved through the construction of wind and solar generation facilities in southern Morocco, connected to Britain via an impressive 4,000-kilometer-long HVDC subsea cable network.
Nomi Ahmad, the CEO of GE Vernova, expressed his enthusiasm for the company's involvement in this project, stating, "We are pleased to be part of the Morocco-UK Power Project. Collaboration across the energy sector is key to ensuring that more affordable, renewable energy is delivered to meet the UK's electrification demands and help the nation achieve its net zero goals."
James Humfrey, the CEO of Xlinks First, the investment company established to deliver the power project, described GE Vernova's contribution as a "further strategic step" in the development of this ambitious endeavor. "Xlinks is committed to meeting the UK's need for reliable, affordable, zero-carbon energy while maximizing the socio-economic benefits of the project in Morocco," Humfrey emphasized.
Beyond its primary objective of providing clean energy to the UK, the Morocco-UK power project holds the potential to create numerous job opportunities and offer training and certification programs in Morocco. This initiative is poised to reinforce Morocco's position as a regional and continental renewable energy hub, while simultaneously addressing the pressing electricity demands in the UK.
The UK Government has acknowledged the potential of this project, with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero currently developing an outline business case. This signals the government's recognition of the importance of innovative endeavors like this one in the pursuit of a sustainable energy future.
