French interior minister questions George Clooney’s naturalization
France’s junior interior minister has raised concerns over the recent naturalization of American actor George Clooney, arguing that the decision sends a questionable signal at a time when citizenship requirements are being tightened for foreign applicants.
Speaking on public radio, Marie-Pierre Vedrenne said she felt personally honored that a global figure such as Clooney would seek French nationality. However, she stressed that the move could raise issues of fairness, particularly as France prepares to enforce stricter language and civic knowledge tests for future candidates.
The minister acknowledged that many French citizens may perceive a “double standard,” especially after the actor admitted earlier this month that his French language skills remain limited despite extensive lessons. From January 1, new regulations will require foreigners seeking long-term residence or citizenship to demonstrate a higher level of French proficiency through formal examinations.
George Clooney, his wife Amal Clooney, and their twin children were granted French nationality by decree published in the official journal. The family spends part of the year in southern France, where they own a residence in the Var region.
The debate comes amid broader discussions on immigration, integration, and national identity, as France seeks to balance openness with stricter integration rules.
