French drone manufacturer Delair expands to Morocco with new defense hub

French drone manufacturer Delair is expanding its international presence by establishing a new subsidiary in Morocco, marking a strategic step in its ambition to strengthen its footprint across Africa’s growing defense and security market.

The new entity, named Delair Africa, will be based in Rabat, which has increasingly become a key hub for defense negotiations and government contracts. The company aims to make the Moroccan capital its regional headquarters for operations across the African continent.

Rabat’s strategic position, combined with its proximity to Casablanca’s major international airport, offers strong logistical advantages for managing regional operations and supporting clients across multiple African countries.

Initially, Delair Africa is expected to employ around ten staff members. Their primary role will be to provide logistical and technical support to regional clients, a function previously managed from the company’s headquarters in Toulouse, France.

The expansion reflects Delair’s gradual growth strategy in Africa, which began in the early 2010s. The company delivered its first drones to the region in 2019, including deployments in countries such as Niger, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Chad, Mauritania, Benin, and Morocco.

In Morocco, the Royal Gendarmerie has already acquired several DT-26 drones, used for border surveillance and security operations, highlighting the country’s increasing adoption of advanced UAV technologies.

The opening of the Moroccan subsidiary also aligns with Delair’s broader international expansion strategy, following the establishment of a branch in Ukraine last year.

Analysts see Morocco’s growing attractiveness to defense companies as part of a wider trend positioning the country as a strategic gateway for industrial and security investment in Africa.
