France freezes unemployment benefit increase as Unédic vote ends in deadlock
Unemployment benefits in France will not be increased on July 1, after a vote within the country’s unemployment insurance body, Unédic, ended in a deadlock, according to an announcement made on Tuesday.
The decision follows a board meeting in which votes in favor of a revaluation of benefits were exactly matched by those against, effectively preventing any adjustment from being implemented.
Unédic, which manages France’s unemployment insurance system, confirmed that the equal split meant no consensus was reached on increasing benefit levels this year.
The last adjustment to unemployment payments took place on July 1, 2025, when benefits were increased by 0.5%, reflecting moderate inflationary pressures at the time.
The absence of a new revaluation comes as households across France continue to face cost-of-living pressures, although inflation has eased compared with previous peaks. Unemployment benefits are typically adjusted periodically to reflect changes in economic conditions, including inflation and labor market dynamics.
The decision highlights ongoing tensions within France’s social policy framework, where policymakers must balance fiscal constraints with purchasing power considerations for jobseekers.
Unédic’s governance structure, which involves both employer and union representatives, often requires consensus for major adjustments, making evenly split votes effectively a rejection of proposed changes.
The outcome means that benefit levels will remain unchanged for the coming period, potentially affecting the income stability of unemployed workers amid broader economic uncertainty in the eurozone.
