Fourteen Yemeni soldiers killed in Houthi attack near Hodeidah

At least 14 Yemeni soldiers were killed during an attack by Houthi rebels near the strategic port city of Hodeidah, according to a military official aligned with Yemen's internationally recognized government.

The assault occurred in the Hays district, south of Hodeidah, where clashes between Houthi fighters and government forces lasted for several hours on Saturday.

Heavy fighting in western Yemen

According to the government military official, Houthi forces launched an attack on positions held by pro-government troops in the Hays area.

Government forces eventually repelled the assault after prolonged fighting, the official said.

While confirming the deaths of 14 soldiers, the official also stated that Houthi forces suffered casualties during the clashes, although no figures were provided.

Strategic front near Hodeidah

The Hodeidah region remains one of Yemen's most strategically important areas due to its location on the Red Sea and its role in humanitarian and commercial supply routes.

Although front lines have remained relatively stable in recent years, intermittent clashes continue between the Iran-aligned Houthi movement and forces loyal to the internationally recognized government, which receives support from Saudi Arabia.

Conflict continues despite diplomatic efforts

The latest violence highlights the fragile security situation in Yemen despite ongoing regional diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing hostilities.

The conflict, which has lasted for more than a decade, continues to produce sporadic outbreaks of fighting even as international mediators seek a lasting political settlement.
