Former Spanish Football Chief to Stand Trial Over Unwanted World Cup Kiss

Former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales is set to face trial on charges of sexual assault and coercion, following allegations that he forcibly kissed player Jennifer Hermoso during the 2023 Women's World Cup celebrations. Prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence of up to two-and-a-half years for Rubiales.

Spain's high court announced that Rubiales will stand trial at the Audiencia Nacional in Madrid, though the trial date has yet to be set. He is charged with sexual assault for the non-consensual kiss and coercion for allegedly pressuring Hermoso to publicly defend his actions.

The incident occurred on August 20th after Spain's victory over England in the Women's World Cup final. As the players were receiving their medals, Rubiales allegedly grabbed Hermoso and kissed her on the lips without her consent during the podium ceremony in Sydney.

Prosecutors claim that after the incident, Rubiales attempted to pressure Hermoso into saying the kiss was consensual, despite her objections. The court outlined potential penalties, including one year for sexual assault and 18 months for coercion.

Hermoso described the encounter as a "non-consensual" act that made her feel "vulnerable." She alleged that Rubiales pressured her to publicly accept his behavior. The player noted that this "impulsive, sexist act" played out on a global stage, attracting significant media attention and public outrage.

In addition to potential prison time, Rubiales could face two years of probation and a €50,000 fine payable to Hermoso as compensation. The court has ordered him to post €65,000 bail within 24 hours to cover potential civil liabilities.

Former Spain coach Jorge Vilda and two ex-federation officials are also charged with allegedly coercing Hermoso after the incident. They are scheduled to stand trial as well.

The incident sparked a wave of outrage across the soccer world and internationally. Rubiales, who is also under investigation for alleged corruption during his tenure at the Royal Spanish Football Federation, initially downplayed the controversy but eventually resigned amid mounting pressure.
