Forging a Sustainable Hydropower Future: ONEE and HSA Join Forces

In a landmark initiative to advance sustainable hydropower practices in Morocco and beyond, the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) has partnered with the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance (HSA). This strategic agreement, signed in Casablanca on Tuesday, reflects a shared commitment to improving the sustainability of hydroelectric facilities, especially pumped-storage power stations (STEP).

The accord, signed by ONEE's Director General, Abderrahim El Hafidi, and HSA's Director General, Joao Costa, aims to implement a comprehensive capacity-building program. This program is designed to strengthen expertise in sustainable hydropower infrastructure, focusing on pumped-storage facilities. Moreover, the agreement allows ONEE to receive guidance and support in obtaining sustainability certification for its STEP projects, aligning with the rigorous standards set by the Hydropower Sustainability Protocol.

A key component of the partnership involves conducting a climate impact study of hydroelectric sites, reinforcing the commitment to environmental stewardship. The program, spanning about 14 months and set to begin in June 2024, is expected to drive significant changes within the hydropower sector.

Under the terms of the agreement, HSA will provide funding for the program through a dedicated fund established by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). This financial backing will support efforts to promote sustainable hydropower practices in Morocco, the Maghreb region, and Francophone Africa.

ONEE will provide the necessary local support to ensure the successful implementation of the project, including human resources and logistical assistance.

The Hydropower Sustainability Alliance, an independent and multi-stakeholder standardization body based in Portugal, oversees the Hydropower Sustainability (HS) certification system and manages the implementation of the HS standard. Its mission is to promote hydropower projects that support healthy ecosystems, prosperous communities, resilient infrastructure, and good governance.

This collaboration demonstrates ONEE's strong commitment to a more sustainable and resilient energy future. By forming strategic partnerships, ONEE aims to improve its energy practices and inspire positive change across the regional and continental energy sectors.
