Forests at the heart of sustainable development and economic growth

the International Day of Forests highlights the essential role forests play in supporting sustainable development. Beyond their environmental importance, forests are increasingly recognized as key drivers of economic growth and social well-being.

This year’s theme, focused on the relationship between forests and economies, underscores how forest resources contribute to livelihoods, industry, and ecological balance. From timber production to non-wood forest products, forests provide vital resources while maintaining biodiversity and regulating natural systems.

In Morocco, forests cover approximately 12% of the national territory and represent a strategic sector. They contribute to economic activity through both direct production and ecosystem services such as soil protection, water regulation, carbon storage, and biodiversity conservation.

Although the measurable economic contribution of the forest sector remains relatively modest, its broader value extends far beyond market figures. Forests support rural communities by generating employment, sustaining livelihoods, and fostering local development, particularly in remote areas.

National efforts to strengthen the sector are guided by long-term strategies aimed at balancing economic use with environmental preservation. These include promoting sustainable forest management, encouraging local value chains, and enhancing community participation in forest governance.

Recent initiatives have also focused on expanding reforestation programs, improving ecosystem restoration, and modernizing sector management through digital tools. These measures aim to increase productivity while ensuring the long-term sustainability of forest resources.

Ultimately, forests are increasingly viewed not only as natural assets but as strategic capital. Their preservation and sustainable use are essential for addressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and rural poverty, making them central to a more resilient and inclusive future.
