Foiled Attempt: Expelled Moroccans' Audacious Escape in Italy

In a daring attempt to evade deportation, 17 young Moroccans, expelled from Turkey, orchestrated a brazen effort to flee an Air Arabia Maroc flight that made an emergency landing in Italy on Sunday. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the complex challenges surrounding irregular migration that continue to plague nations worldwide.

The dramatic turn of events unfolded when one of the passengers feigned a heart attack, prompting the aircraft, originally bound for Tangier from Istanbul, to divert its course and make an unscheduled stop in Italy. Seizing this opportunity, the group of Moroccans endeavored to escape the flight, only to be swiftly intercepted by Italian authorities, thwarting their audacious plan.

This incident bears a striking resemblance to a previous occurrence in 2021 when 24 Moroccan nationals, with the exception of one individual, attempted a mass exodus from an Air Arabia flight destined for Turkey. The incident, dubbed the "great escape" by numerous reports, highlighted the extraordinary lengths some individuals are willing to go to in their pursuit of irregular migration.

Alarmingly, investigations revealed that the 2021 emergency landing was meticulously planned nearly five months in advance by members of a Moroccan Facebook group named "Brooklyn." This calculated approach underscores the intricate networks and strategies employed by those facilitating irregular migration.

December 2022 witnessed another daring escapade, with 28 migrants fleeing a plane that conducted an emergency landing at Barcelona's El Prat airport after a woman falsely claimed to be in labor on a flight from Morocco to Turkey.

As the global community grapples with the multifaceted issue of irregular migration, Morocco finds itself at the forefront of this challenge. In a concerted effort to address the problem, Moroccan law enforcement authorities apprehended approximately 28,863 irregular migrants last year, including 18,820 individuals of foreign nationalities. Additionally, they dismantled 121 criminal networks, arrested 594 organizers and mediators of migration, seized 707 forged documents, and confiscated 215 boats and 31 vessels utilized in organized irregular migration attempts.

While the thwarted escape attempt in Italy serves as a stark reminder of the audacity and determination of those seeking irregular migration, it also underscores the urgent need for comprehensive and humane solutions to address the root causes driving these perilous journeys.
