Flood alerts remain at highest level in western France over the weekend
Several departments in western France remain under severe flood warnings as authorities extend red alerts through the weekend. The departments of Loire-Atlantique, Charente-Maritime, and Maine-et-Loire continue to face the highest level of vigilance due to rising river levels and persistent flooding risks.
In addition, nine other western departments are under orange alert, including Morbihan, Ille-et-Vilaine, Sarthe, Indre-et-Loire, Vendée, Charente, Gironde, Landes, and Lot-et-Garonne.
According to France’s flood monitoring service Vigicrues, weather conditions are expected to remain generally dry and calmer throughout the weekend and into early next week. This stabilization is likely to support gradual water recession in upstream areas. However, officials warn that downstream sections of rivers may still experience rising or sustained high water levels before any significant improvement occurs.
In Maine-et-Loire, river levels are forecast to stabilize between Saturday night and Sunday, while in areas around Saintes in Charente-Maritime, water levels are expected to remain very high in the coming days. Authorities are urging residents in affected regions to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions as emergency services continue monitoring the situation.
Although improving weather conditions offer some relief, officials stress that the risk is not yet over and caution remains necessary until water levels return to normal.
