"Everybody Loves Touda" by Nabil Ayouch Selected for Cannes Film Festival 2024
Nabil Ayouch's upcoming film, "Everybody Loves Touda," has been selected to be part of the official selection of the next edition of the Cannes Film Festival, taking place from May 14th to 25th, 2024. It will be screened in the "Cannes Première" category. This marks the first time that Morocco has been selected in this category, reserved for big names in cinema.
This selection is another milestone for Nabil Ayouch, following his inclusion in the official competition in 2021 for "Haut et Fort," in the Directors' Fortnight for "Much Loved" in 2015, and in the Un Certain Regard section for "Les Chevaux de Dieu" in 2012.
This selection once again demonstrates the dynamism of Moroccan cinema on the international stage. Examples include the Cannes selections of Maryam Touzani in 2019 with "Adam" and in 2022 with "Le Bleu du Caftan," which won the FIPRESCI prize and was later shortlisted for the Oscars, garnering over 500,000 admissions worldwide, a record for a Moroccan film.
The lead role in "Everybody Loves Touda" is played by Nisrin Erradi ("Adam"). She portrays Touda, a woman who dreams only of one thing: becoming a Cheikha. Performing every night in the bars of her small provincial town under the gaze of men, Touda harbors hope for a better future for herself and her son. Mistreated and humiliated, she decides to leave everything behind for the lights of Casablanca...
Produced by Ali'n Productions (Morocco), in co-production with Les Films du Nouveau Monde (France), Velvet Films (Belgium), SnowGlobe (Denmark), Viking Film (Netherlands), and Staer (Norway), "Everybody Loves Touda" is sold internationally by MK2 International and will be distributed in France by Ad Vitam. The film will soon be released in theaters in Morocco.
