European airlines’ booking surge fades as Gulf carriers recover capacity
European airlines are seeing a rapid slowdown in the booking surge that followed major disruptions to Gulf aviation hubs, as Middle Eastern carriers restore capacity and reclaim market share across long-haul routes.
The temporary shift in demand emerged after airspace restrictions and route closures triggered by an armed escalation involving Iran and regional military action. The disruption forced major Gulf carriers to ground aircraft or reroute flights, reducing connectivity across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. During this period, European airlines moved quickly to absorb displaced demand, especially on Asia-Pacific routes, recording a short-term rise in bookings and load factors.
Industry executives now indicate that this advantage is already fading. European network carriers expanded capacity into high-demand corridors from hubs such as London, but describe the gains as temporary and not embedded in long-term strategy. Data from the sector shows Gulf carriers had operated at sharply reduced capacity during the disruption, before gradually restoring operations as airspace restrictions were lifted and fleets returned to service.
The recovery has been swift. Major Gulf airlines are rebuilding extensive global networks spanning more than 150 destinations, while restoring capacity levels toward pre-crisis norms. Aviation authorities in the Gulf have lifted temporary restrictions, enabling a broader normalization of traffic flows. At the same time, European airlines face new pressure from fuel costs and shifting passenger behavior, with some travelers showing a continued preference for direct routes even after full capacity returns.
Analysts expect a complex competitive landscape in the coming months. Some of the market share gains made by European carriers may persist in specific corridors, but structural advantages held by Gulf hubs are expected to reassert themselves as stability returns. The broader industry also faces uncertainty, with global passenger traffic showing signs of contraction after its post-pandemic recovery phase and financial pressure mounting on lower-cost operators.
