EU deepens strategic ties with Brazil to secure critical mineral supply chains

The European Union is intensifying efforts to secure long-term access to critical minerals by strengthening its partnership with Brazil, a move aimed at reducing dependency on concentrated global supply chains dominated by a limited number of producers.

Speaking during a visit to Brazil, EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela highlighted the strategic importance of expanding cooperation with resource-rich countries as Europe accelerates its transition toward clean energy technologies and advanced manufacturing.

At the center of this initiative is a growing interest in rare earth elements and other critical raw materials essential for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and high-tech industries. Brazil, with its vast mineral reserves and expanding exploration projects, has emerged as a key candidate in the EU’s diversification strategy.

During his visit, Síkela toured a rare earth research and processing facility operated by Viridis Mining and Minerals in Poços de Caldas. The site is among a select group of priority projects identified to accelerate technical and industrial cooperation between European and Brazilian stakeholders.

The EU’s approach reflects a broader geopolitical shift in which access to strategic resources has become a central pillar of economic security policy. Officials in Brussels have repeatedly stressed the need to reduce reliance on fragmented supply chains and strengthen partnerships with countries capable of scaling sustainable extraction and processing capacity.

Brazil’s mining sector, long recognized for its diversity of mineral resources, is increasingly viewed as a critical component in global supply chain realignment. In addition to rare earths, the country holds significant reserves of nickel, niobium, and lithium—materials essential for battery production and renewable energy infrastructure.

Beyond resource access, the EU’s engagement strategy emphasizes technology transfer, environmental standards, and investment frameworks designed to ensure that mineral development aligns with sustainability goals. Brazilian authorities have expressed interest in leveraging foreign partnerships to enhance domestic value-added processing and industrial capacity.

The discussions also underscore growing competition among major economies to secure long-term supplies of critical inputs. As global demand for clean technologies accelerates, countries such as the United States, China, and members of the EU are increasingly pursuing bilateral agreements and strategic alliances with resource-rich regions.

While challenges remain—including regulatory complexity, infrastructure gaps, and environmental concerns—both sides signal a willingness to deepen cooperation. For the EU, Brazil represents not only a supplier of raw materials but also a potential strategic partner in reshaping the global industrial landscape.

As negotiations progress, the partnership could become a defining element of Europe’s broader effort to build resilient, diversified, and sustainable supply chains for the decades ahead.
