Erdoğan says Türkiye is a model country for freedom of religion
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that Türkiye stands as an example of coexistence where people of different faiths can freely practice their religion. His remarks came during an iftar dinner held in the capital, Ankara, attended by representatives of several religious minority communities.
Speaking to guests at the gathering, the president highlighted the importance of freedom of religion and conscience in Turkish society. He said the country aims to ensure that all citizens, regardless of their beliefs, can live together in an atmosphere of respect and tolerance.
Erdoğan emphasized that religious communities in Türkiye are able to preserve their traditions and manage their own institutions, pointing to this as part of the country’s commitment to cultural diversity and social harmony.
During his speech, the Turkish leader also addressed global concerns related to discrimination and religious intolerance. He warned that the rise of anti-Muslim sentiment in various parts of the world threatens social cohesion and the culture of peaceful coexistence.
According to Erdoğan, Islamophobia represents a serious challenge not only for Muslim communities but also for broader efforts to promote mutual understanding among religions. He also strongly condemned anti-Semitism, describing it as another form of hatred that cannot be justified.
The president further stated that the Turkish authorities reject extremist violence carried out in the name of religion. He specifically denounced the actions of groups such as Islamic State, which have targeted places of worship including mosques, churches, and synagogues.
The iftar event served as an opportunity for dialogue between government officials and religious leaders, reinforcing the message of coexistence and interfaith cooperation in Turkish society.
