Deadly Russian Assault Hits Multiple Ukrainian Cities, Causing Widespread Damage

A devastating Russian assault across Ukraine on Monday morning resulted in the deaths of at least three people and inflicted severe damage on the nation's power and water infrastructure.

Explosions were reported in several cities, including Kyiv, as over half of Ukraine's regions were targeted. Authorities in Zaporizhzhia, Lutsk, and the central Dnipropetrovsk region confirmed casualties from the extensive air raid, which involved missiles and drones.

Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmygal stated that the attacks were focused on the country's energy infrastructure, a tactic that has been consistent throughout Moscow's military strategy. The barrage of drone and missile strikes began overnight and persisted into the morning, with explosions heard from Lutsk in the west to Dnipro in the east. The entire nation was placed under an air raid alert, and citizens were advised to seek shelter.

Prime Minister Shmygal reported that 15 regions were targeted, with the attacks employing various weapons including drones, cruise missiles, and supersonic missiles. The strikes resulted in both casualties and significant infrastructure damage. A 69-year-old man in Dnipropetrovsk was killed, several houses were damaged, and fatalities were reported in Zaporizhzhia and Lutsk. In Poltava, five people were injured when an industrial facility was hit.

The attacks have led to serious disruptions in power and water supplies, with many cities, including Kyiv, experiencing outages. Emergency blackouts have been implemented, and energy company DTEK is working to restore electricity across the country.

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine's energy infrastructure has been a primary target. Recent months have seen a renewed focus on the power grid, leading to frequent blackouts. In June, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that half of Ukraine’s electricity-generating capacity had been destroyed since late March. The country relies on energy imports from the European Union, but this has not been sufficient, necessitating planned nationwide blackouts to safeguard critical services.

Despite some recent advances by Russian forces in the east, Ukraine launched a surprise offensive into Russia's Kursk region, although this has yet to significantly alter the strategic situation. Ukraine also attempted to strike an oil refinery in Yaroslavl, north-east of Moscow, with no reported casualties or damage. Meanwhile, Russia's defense ministry claimed to have downed nine drones over its Saratov region.

In response to the ongoing conflict, Andriy Yermak, President Zelensky’s chief of staff, has urged Ukraine's allies to authorize long-range attacks on Russia using Western-supplied weapons.
