Darija day expands diaspora cultural competition across Europe
The fourth edition of Darija Day will take place in Gennevilliers, in the Paris region, on June 6. The event centers on an eloquence competition dedicated to Moroccan Darija and targets members of the Moroccan diaspora in Europe. Organizers present it as a platform for cultural expression and linguistic pride beyond Morocco’s borders.
Launched in early 2025, Darija Day has grown into a recurring biannual event. It brings together participants from different backgrounds, including students, teachers, coaches, and digital content creators based mainly in France. Each edition features public speaking performances in Darija, with contestants evaluated on clarity, persuasion, and expressive capacity.
The initiative is driven by MRE Business Company, an organization focused on supporting Moroccans living abroad through advisory services, investment guidance, and cultural programming. The project also involves professionals from communication and education fields who aim to reposition Darija as a language capable of formal expression and structured debate. The competition has received recognition during diaspora-focused cultural programming events involving Moroccan institutional and community figures.
Darija, long considered an informal spoken variety without official status, has historically been sidelined in education and administration in favor of Modern Standard Arabic and French in Morocco. In recent years, its visibility has increased through media, digital platforms, and cultural initiatives that present it as a medium of creativity and identity. Darija Day reflects this shift by placing the language in a competitive and public-speaking format rather than limiting it to everyday conversation.
The model has also begun to expand beyond France. A version of the event was launched in London, supported by organizations working with the Moroccan diaspora in the United Kingdom. This expansion signals the emergence of a broader transnational cultural network linking Moroccan communities across Europe through shared language and identity practices.
