Akhannouch Represents Morocco at Italy-Africa Summit

The Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, represented Morocco at the Italy-Africa Summit held on January 28 and 29 in Rome. The summit served as an opportunity for both countries to strengthen their relations and discuss cooperation in areas such as food security, culture, energy, and economic development.

Akhannouch met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Additionally, he engaged with other African heads of state, including Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Senegalese President Macky Sall.

Chariot Limited Launches Transition Gas Drilling Campaign in Morocco

Chariot Limited, a British company specializing in transitional energies, announced the initiation of a transition gas drilling campaign in Morocco. Scheduled to start in late Q1 2024, the campaign will involve drilling two wells.

Chariot Limited holds a 75% stake in the Loukos license, covering 10,000 square kilometers in the Essaouira-Meknes basin. The license's proximity to Morocco's industrial markets makes it an ideal location for transition gas production.

The 2024 campaign will focus on the Gaufrette prospect, identified through 3D seismic data as a potential production target.

Morocco and Spain: Business Meeting to Strengthen Economic Ties

Around a hundred Moroccan and Catalan business leaders participated in a high-level business meeting in Barcelona, Spain. Organized by the Moroccan embassy in Spain, the event aimed to promote investment opportunities in Morocco.

Moroccan Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister for Investment, Convergence, and Public Policy Evaluation, Mohcine Jazouli, highlighted Morocco's status as a regional economic power. He emphasized the country's modern, diversified economy, world-class infrastructure, young and skilled workforce, and a consumer market of 2.5 billion individuals. Jazouli also underscored Morocco's leadership in the green transition and its position as Africa's top renewable energy producer.

Marjane Group and Atlas Hospitality Group announced the establishment of a joint venture, Flavors Food Company, specializing in public catering.

Flavors Food Company plans to introduce various innovative and diverse catering concepts tailored to the tastes and expectations of Moroccan consumers. The company aims to strategically position itself in key locations, including Marjane Group's shopping centers, upscale urban hotels, and other high-traffic sites.

Goods Transport Unions: "No" to the Draft Decree

Unions representing goods transport rejected the draft decree aimed at revising regulations in the sector. They argue that if adopted, the proposed text would jeopardize the stability of transport companies, particularly the smaller ones.

The draft decree, posted on the government's website on January 18, includes measures such as strengthening driver training requirements, limiting the number of trucks per company, and imposing stricter sanctions for violations.

The three key Sahelian countries Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger announced their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This withdrawal poses a significant setback to regional integration in West Africa.

ECOWAS, comprising 15 member countries, was established in 1975 to promote economic cooperation and integration among its members. The exit of these three Sahelian nations is a blow to the organization, given their substantial contributions to its GDP and population.

Maroc Telecom Ordered to Pay 6.36 Billion Dirhams to inwi

Maroc Telecom has been ordered by the Rabat Commercial Court to pay 6.36 billion dirhams to inwi. This decision follows a dispute between the two telecom operators, with inwi accusing Maroc Telecom of anti-competitive practices.

The court ruled that Maroc Telecom abused its dominant position in the Moroccan telecommunications market, including imposing discriminatory prices on inwi, thus maintaining its monopoly.
