Codelco and Microsoft partner to explore AI in mining operations

Chile's state-owned copper producer, Codelco, the world's largest copper mining company, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Microsoft to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI), advanced analytics, automation, and digital security in mining operations. The announcement was made on March 5, 2026.

The initial agreement will last for 18 months and includes joint governance for strategic and operational tracking. The collaboration aims to enhance decision-making, automate critical processes, implement autonomous operations, and strengthen cybersecurity measures within Codelco's operations.

Both companies will participate in early testing of innovative solutions and share international experiences in the mining sector. Ruben Alvarado, CEO of Codelco, highlighted that the partnership strengthens the company's leadership in digital transformation and enables the processing of large volumes of operational data.

Tito Arciniega, President of Microsoft Latin America, emphasized that AI can improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability in mining while creating long-term value for both Codelco and Chile. The partnership reflects the growing importance of technology in the mining industry, particularly in enhancing productivity and worker safety.
