China targets US defense firms over arms sales to Taiwan

Beijing has imposed sanctions on twenty American defense contractors and ten senior executives in response to Washington’s latest military aid package to Taiwan, intensifying friction between the United States and China over the island’s security and sovereignty.

China’s Foreign Ministry said the sanctions include asset freezes, bans on business transactions with Chinese organizations, and travel restrictions for the individuals involved. The move follows the US approval of an arms deal valued at more than 11 billion dollars, which includes advanced rocket systems, missiles, drones, and artillery designed to strengthen Taiwan’s defense capabilities.

A ministry spokesperson described Taiwan as “the core of China’s core interests” and warned that any attempt to challenge Beijing’s position on the issue would face firm retaliation. China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has repeatedly condemned US arms sales as interference in its internal affairs.

Washington maintains that such military support is consistent with the Taiwan Relations Act, which obliges the US to help the island maintain a sufficient self-defense capacity. The Pentagon stated that the latest deal aims to enhance regional stability and deter potential aggression, while Taipei said the weapons would reinforce its deterrence posture amid heightened military pressure from Beijing.

Observers note that the weapons package, which includes High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems and long-range tactical missiles similar to those supplied to Ukraine, reflects a broader US strategy to fortify alliances and prevent unilateral changes to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.
