Taiwan revives anti-communist military education amid growing pressure from China

Taiwan has reinstated formal anti-communist patriotic education for military academy graduates after a 25-year hiatus, citing increasing military pressure and infiltration threats from China.

The move, announced by Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense on Sunday, comes as officials also reported a rise in Chinese naval activity around the island.

Military curriculum reinstated after 25 years

The restored programme revives what was once known as "anti-communist patriotic education," a component of military training that was discontinued in 2002 and replaced with a broader patriotic education curriculum.

According to the defense ministry, the decision reflects a changing security environment and the need to prepare future officers for evolving national defense challenges.

Officials said the courses are intended to strengthen graduates' understanding of national security threats and reinforce the military's mission.

Response to growing security concerns

In a statement, the ministry said officers must clearly understand "why we fight, and for whom we fight" in light of what it described as increasing military and infiltration risks posed by China.

The announcement coincides with reports from senior Taiwanese defense officials of another increase in Chinese naval operations near the island.

Rising cross-Strait tensions

Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has never ruled out the use of force to bring the self-governed island under its control.

China has intensified military activities around Taiwan in recent years, including air and naval patrols, while Taipei has responded by strengthening its defense posture and military preparedness.

China's Ministry of National Defense did not immediately comment on Taiwan's decision.

The reinstatement of the training programme underscores the continued deterioration in cross-Strait relations and Taiwan's efforts to reinforce military readiness amid a shifting regional security landscape.
