Casablanca's Derb Omar Market Trucks Set for Relocation

Casablanca, a bustling economic hub, is gearing up for a transformative initiative aimed at streamlining commercial activities and alleviating urban congestion. According to the Arabic daily Assabah, a plan is in motion to relocate large-scale commercial operations from the historic Derb Omar market to the Mediouna prefecture, while converting approximately 10,000 shops into showroom spaces.

The wali (governor), accompanied by various local and regional officials, as well as representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and other professional associations, has ratified a strategy to restrict access to the historic market for medium and large trucks. This move aims to reduce congestion in the city center while preserving existing commercial activities, which will now focus on sales and negotiations without the loading or unloading of large quantities of goods.

Hassan Barkani, the president of the Regional Chamber of Commerce, emphasizes that the plan does not entail the eviction of merchants but rather a reorganization of logistical flows to improve accessibility and urban space management.

According to Barkani, large-scale delivery operations will be relocated to a new logistics zone in Mediouna, where a 42-hectare site is planned for the development of a modern logistics platform.

This new site, strategically located in close proximity to highway access points, will feature 505 dedicated storage spaces. This restructuring will help decongest the Derb Omar market by confining large-scale transportation activities to a specifically designed area, while maintaining traditional commercial activities in the city center.

The relocation of the trucks is a pivotal step in Casablanca's efforts to balance economic growth and urban sustainability. By separating the large-scale commercial operations from the historic market, the city aims to enhance mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and create a more pedestrian-friendly environment in the heart of the city.

This initiative not only addresses logistical challenges but also presents an opportunity for revitalization. The conversion of shops into showrooms promises to breathe new life into the historic market, fostering a more modern and engaging shopping experience for locals and visitors alike.

As Casablanca continues to evolve and adapt to the demands of a thriving commercial landscape, this strategic move exemplifies the city's commitment to urban planning and sustainable development, ensuring a harmonious coexistence between economic prosperity and quality of life for its residents.
