Carrefour shareholders expected to approve third term for CEO Alexandre Bompard
Shareholders of French retail giant Carrefour are expected to approve a third term for Chief Executive Officer Alexandre Bompard during the company’s annual general meeting.
Bompard, who has led the supermarket group since 2017, is widely credited with steering Carrefour through a period of transformation marked by digital expansion, restructuring efforts, and changing consumer habits. His renewal had already received unanimous support from the company’s board of directors.
Under his leadership, Carrefour has focused on modernizing its business model by investing in fresh food products, e-commerce, and artificial intelligence technologies. The company has also introduced long-term strategic objectives aimed at strengthening competitiveness in an increasingly demanding retail market.
Recent developments have improved investor confidence, including a recovery in Carrefour’s stock performance and the arrival of new influential shareholders. The group has also faced several legal and labor-related challenges linked to its franchise and management systems.
One of the most debated issues concerns the expansion of lease-management arrangements for certain stores, a model defended by the company as a way to preserve employment and maintain struggling locations. Critics, including labor unions, argue that the system could weaken workers’ protections.
Discussions during the shareholders’ meeting are also expected to address executive compensation, the impact of global economic tensions on retail operations, and ongoing pressure on food prices and profit margins.
Despite criticism from some unions and political figures, Carrefour’s leadership maintains that its strategy has helped stabilize the company and avoid large-scale store closures in recent years.
