Car plows into crowd outside bar in northern France, leaving one dead and five injured
A tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday in Évreux, Normandy, when a man drove a car into a crowd outside a bar, killing one person and injuring five others.
According to prosecutors, the attack followed a dispute inside the establishment around 4 a.m. Staff members had escorted customers outside after a confrontation involving a young woman and several men. Moments later, the situation escalated when a man entered a vehicle and deliberately reversed at high speed into the group gathered outside.
Authorities confirmed that two men and one woman have been taken into custody. An investigation into homicide and attempted homicide has been opened, while terrorism has been ruled out as a motive. “Unfortunately, the toll is very heavy,” local prosecutor Rémi Coutin said, adding that two of the injured remain in critical condition.
Mayor Guy Lefrand described the events as a “terrible tragedy” in a statement, expressing condolences to the victims’ families and praising emergency services for their swift response. “The situation has now returned to calm,” he said, noting that police are working to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
The case has sparked shock and sadness in the local community, with authorities pledging full transparency in the ongoing investigation.
