BMW recalls more than 29,000 US vehicles over potential fire hazard

BMW has launched a recall affecting more than 29,000 vehicles in the United States after identifying a defect that could increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue involves the engine starter relay, which may corrode over time and create conditions that could lead to overheating or an electrical short circuit.

Electrical component at the center of the recall

Federal safety regulators said corrosion affecting the starter relay could compromise the electrical system, creating a higher risk of excessive heat generation. In certain situations, this could result in a short circuit capable of increasing the likelihood of a vehicle fire.

The recall targets 29,119 vehicles sold in the U.S. market.

Multiple BMW models affected

The campaign includes several plug-in hybrid models, including the BMW 530e xDrive, the BMW 740Le xDrive and selected vehicles from the company's iPerformance lineup.

Owners of affected vehicles are expected to receive official notification explaining the recall process and the corrective measures available through authorized dealerships.

Free repairs for customers

BMW dealers will replace the engine starter component at no cost to vehicle owners, eliminating the identified defect and restoring compliance with federal safety standards.

Vehicle recalls are a routine part of the automotive industry's quality control process, allowing manufacturers to address potential safety concerns before they lead to more serious incidents.

Commitment to vehicle safety

The latest recall highlights the importance of continuous monitoring of electrical systems as vehicles become increasingly sophisticated and incorporate more advanced electronic components.

By proactively replacing the affected starter assemblies, BMW aims to minimize safety risks while maintaining customer confidence and meeting regulatory requirements in the United States.
