Belle-Île mayor dies after confrontation with boater in Brittany
A local elected official has died following a confrontation at the main harbor of Belle-Île-en-Mer, prompting a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Dominique Rousselot, mayor of Locmaria, one of the four municipalities on the island off the coast of Brittany, suffered a fatal medical emergency after an altercation on Saturday evening at Le Palais harbor, according to information released by French authorities and local media.
Emergency response failed to save the mayor
Gendarmes were called to the scene shortly before 9:00 p.m. following reports of a physical dispute on the waterfront. When emergency responders arrived, Rousselot was found in cardiac arrest on the dock.
Despite prolonged resuscitation efforts, he could not be revived. The mayor had recently begun serving a second municipal term and also worked as a dock supervisor at the island's ferry terminal.
Suspect identified as repeat offender
Investigators have identified the individual involved in the confrontation as a 55-year-old recreational boater reportedly known to law enforcement for previous aggravated assault offences.
The precise sequence of events leading to the mayor's collapse has not yet been established, and authorities have not publicly confirmed whether the death resulted directly from injuries sustained during the altercation or from another medical cause.
Investigation underway
The investigation has been assigned to the Research Brigade of Lorient, which is examining witness testimony, forensic evidence and the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
