Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye appointed Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister on Tuesday evening, according to a decree read on the national television (RTS) by the Secretary General of the Presidency.

The appointment of Sonko (49 years old), a former deputy and president of the Pastef party (African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity), comes just hours after the swearing-in ceremony and installation of the newly elected president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

"I realize the importance of the trust he (President Faye) has placed in me," Sonko said on RTS.

The new Prime Minister also announced that the new government will be formed in the coming hours.

Additionally, the Senegalese president appointed Mary Tew Niane as Minister-Director of the President's Cabinet, while Oumar Samba Ba was reappointed to his position as Minister-Secretary General of the Presidency. Faye (44 years old), who won the presidential election on March 24 in the first round with 54.28% of the votes, far ahead of candidate Amadou Ba (35.79%), is the fifth president of Senegal since the country's independence in 1960.
