Austria-Italy and Portugal-Brazil set for U17 World Cup semifinals
The U17 World Cup in Qatar, which runs until November 27, has reached its decisive phase, with two high-profile semifinals scheduled this Monday at Doha’s Aspire Zone. Austria will face Italy, while Portugal goes head-to-head with Brazil for a place in the final.
Austria advanced to the last four after a narrow 1–0 win over Japan in the quarterfinals. Their next challenge will be Italy, who also secured a tight 1–0 victory, overcoming Burkina Faso to book their semifinal spot.
The clash between Austria and Italy promises to be intense. Both teams have won all six of their matches in the tournament so far, but they arrive with contrasting styles: Austria boasts one of the strongest defenses in the competition—having conceded only once—while Italy stands out for its attack-focused approach.
The other semifinal will see Portugal take on Brazil. Portugal earned their qualification by defeating Switzerland 2–0, marking their first appearance in the U17 World Cup semifinals since 1989. Manuel Albino Morim’s squad aims to build on their impressive run, which includes five victories and just one defeat.
Brazil, meanwhile, narrowly defeated Morocco 2–1 in the previous round. Although the South American side remains a formidable opponent, their inconsistent performances — notably against Morocco and France — raise questions ahead of a clash with Portugal, a team currently showing confidence and efficiency.
