Australian teen charged over alleged threat against Israeli president
Australian authorities have charged a 19-year-old man from Sydney for allegedly posting an online death threat targeting Israeli President Isaac Herzog ahead of his scheduled visit to the country.
The suspect was arrested on Wednesday after police executed a search warrant at his home. He faces a charge of using a carriage service to threaten a foreign head of state, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, according to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and reports by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
President Herzog is expected to visit Australia on Sunday for a four-day official trip, following an invitation from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The investigation into the threat reportedly began in January after the message appeared on a social media platform.
The arrest has occurred amid a broader political debate, with some activists and human rights groups calling for Herzog to be denied entry or even detained, citing a UN Human Rights Council inquiry into alleged atrocities in the Gaza Strip. Authorities stress, however, that the charges are related to a criminal threat and not the political opinions surrounding the president’s visit.
