Australian man charged after Thai teenager found dead in Pattaya
Thai authorities have launched a high-profile murder investigation after the body of a 17-year-old girl was discovered inside a suitcase in the coastal city of Pattaya. An Australian man has been arrested and formally charged in connection with the case.
The victim's family has expressed profound grief following the discovery, describing the loss as devastating while calling for justice through the legal process.
Suspect arrested before leaving the country
According to Thai police, the suspect, an Australian man in his 40s identified as Simon Peter Carman, was arrested at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport as he was preparing to board a flight to Australia.
Investigators have charged him with murder, concealing a body, moving or destroying a body, and offences related to taking a minor for sexual purposes. The suspect is expected to face judicial proceedings in Thailand.
CCTV evidence plays key role in investigation
Police said the investigation relied heavily on surveillance camera footage collected from locations in Pattaya.
Authorities allege that video recordings show the suspect entering a condominium with the teenager before later leaving the building alone while carrying a suitcase. Investigators believe the suitcase was subsequently transported to an area near a railway line, where the victim's body was later recovered.
The evidence gathered during the investigation led police to obtain an arrest warrant before detaining the suspect at the airport.
Investigation continues
While being questioned by investigators, the suspect reportedly expressed sympathy to the victim's family. However, Thai authorities have not disclosed further details regarding his statement or the circumstances surrounding the alleged crime.
Investigators continue to collect forensic evidence and interview witnesses as they seek to establish the full sequence of events.
Focus turns to judicial process
The case has attracted widespread attention in Thailand due to the age of the victim and the seriousness of the allegations. Legal proceedings are expected to determine the facts presented by prosecutors and the defence as the investigation advances.
Authorities have urged the public to allow the judicial process to proceed while refraining from speculation before the courts examine the evidence.
