Artificial Intelligence supports early diagnosis in Moroccan public hospitals

The Moroccan Ministry of Health and Social Protection is accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into public healthcare institutions in an effort to improve early diagnosis and enhance the quality of patient care.

Speaking in Rabat during a parliamentary session dedicated to the digital transformation of the health system, Health Minister Amine Tehraoui outlined several ongoing initiatives aimed at modernizing medical services through advanced technologies.

One of the key projects is a pilot program that uses AI-assisted tools to support ultrasound imaging and interpretation. This initiative is primarily focused on improving prenatal care for pregnant women, especially in rural areas. It is currently being implemented in health centers in Aghbala, in the Béni Mellal province, and Moulay Bouazza, in the Khénifra province. The program also aims to support midwives and healthcare professionals while improving early detection of high-risk pregnancies.

The minister also announced the introduction of AI-based systems to assist in early breast cancer detection at the National Institute of Oncology within the Ibn Sina University Hospital in Rabat. This initiative seeks to improve diagnostic speed and accuracy, enabling earlier treatment for patients.

In addition, the ministry is working on a nationwide project to unify healthcare information systems. This includes the digitalization of hospitals, integration of primary healthcare centers, and the creation of a connected national health network.

Efforts are also underway to develop a unified electronic medical record system and expand telemedicine services, particularly in regions facing shortages of specialized medical professionals. These reforms aim to strengthen accessibility, efficiency, and equity within Morocco’s healthcare system.
