Anthropic shifts to usage pricing for enterprise AI customers
Anthropic has overhauled its enterprise pricing model for Claude, replacing fixed per-seat subscriptions with lower access fees tied to mandatory usage commitments. The change reflects growing pressure on computing capacity and is expected to raise total costs for many corporate customers, according to Time.
Under the new structure, previous enterprise tiers priced at 200 dollars and 40 dollars per user per month have been replaced by role-based plans. Claude Code is now priced at 20 dollars per user monthly for technical users, while Claude.ai costs 10 dollars for general business users. However, these fees only cover platform access. Actual usage of Claude services is billed separately through API rates based on token consumption.
The key shift lies in mandatory spending commitments. Anthropic now estimates each client’s expected monthly usage and requires them to commit to that level of spending in advance. Customers must pay the committed amount regardless of actual usage. At the same time, previous API volume discounts of 10 to 15 percent have been removed. Procurement analysts say this combination leads to higher total cost of ownership for most organizations despite lower headline subscription prices.
The pricing overhaul is linked to tightening compute supply. Reports indicate Anthropic’s infrastructure has faced constraints, with API uptime below levels typically maintained by major cloud providers. Demand for advanced chips such as Nvidia Blackwell has surged, with rental prices rising sharply. Analysts expect global demand for AI compute capacity to exceed supply for several years, increasing pressure on providers to manage costs more directly.
Anthropic’s rapid growth has intensified these challenges. The company’s annualized revenue has climbed from about 9 billion dollars at the end of 2025 to roughly 30 billion, with more than 1,000 customers now spending over 1 million dollars annually. The new pricing model shifts the financial burden of compute capacity from Anthropic to its clients, allowing the company to scale large contracts without securing all required resources upfront.
The move reflects a broader shift across the AI industry. OpenAI has transitioned some services to token-based billing, while GitHub has tightened usage limits for Copilot. Analysts say predictable flat-rate AI subscriptions are being replaced by consumption-based models, forcing enterprise buyers to renegotiate contracts and manage new cost risks.
