Algerian regime accused of fabricating US statements to target Morocco

The Algerian regime has once again come under fire for spreading disinformation, with its online networks accused of fabricating official US government statements to undermine Morocco’s diplomatic ties with the United States. The latest incident follows a pattern of falsehoods aimed at discrediting Morocco’s growing international support over the Sahara dispute.

Allegations of forgery and disinformation

In recent days, Algerian regime-linked social media accounts circulated a forged statement purportedly from the US State Department. The document falsely claimed that US President Donald Trump’s recent message to King Mohammed VI, reaffirming Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, was fabricated. However, the forgery was quickly exposed due to glaring errors, including typos like “Amrica” instead of “America,” as well as an obviously falsified signature.

Moroccan social media users were quick to debunk the claims, highlighting the Algerian regime’s repeated use of disinformation tactics to support its narrative on the Sahara conflict. This latest fabrication echoes a similar incident in July when Algeria’s state media falsely attributed a letter to Trump, which critics later revealed to be a misrepresentation of US policy.

International isolation of Algeria’s stance

The disinformation campaign comes as Morocco continues to garner global support for its Autonomy Plan as the most credible and practical solution to the Sahara conflict. Over 115 countries now back Rabat’s proposal, leaving Algeria and its support for the Polisario Front increasingly isolated on the world stage.

Despite King Mohammed VI’s recent call for dialogue and reconciliation during his Throne Day speech, Algeria’s regime has maintained its silence, opting instead to escalate its anti-Morocco rhetoric. The King emphasized the importance of good neighborly relations to address regional challenges, but Algeria’s refusal to engage has drawn criticism from international observers.

A pattern of disinformation

Algeria’s latest attempt to manipulate public opinion underscores a broader strategy of spreading falsehoods to challenge Morocco’s diplomatic achievements. Observers note that such tactics not only harm the credibility of Algeria’s regime but also hinder opportunities for regional cooperation and reconciliation.

The regime’s focus on fabricating statements and fueling tensions contrasts sharply with Morocco’s proactive diplomacy, including its efforts to strengthen economic and political ties with key international partners.
