Albania protests grow over Trump-linked luxury resort development

Thousands of demonstrators filled the streets of Tirana on Saturday in the largest rally yet against a proposed luxury tourism project associated with members of U.S. President Donald Trump's family, as opposition to the development continues to gain momentum across Albania.

The protest marked the 35th consecutive day of demonstrations, reflecting growing public concern over the government's handling of the multibillion-dollar project and its potential environmental consequences.

Movement expands beyond environmental concerns

Initially driven by objections to the planned construction of a luxury resort in the protected coastal area of Zvernec, the campaign has evolved into a broader protest against governance and transparency.

Participants accuse Prime Minister Edi Rama's administration of failing to provide sufficient public oversight of the project, with many demonstrators demanding greater accountability in decision-making related to major investments.

The demonstrations have become one of the country's most significant civic mobilizations in recent years.

"Flamingo Revolution" gains national attention

The protest movement has adopted the name "Flamingo Revolution," inspired by the migratory flamingos that inhabit the protected lagoon near the proposed development site.

Organizers argue that large-scale construction could threaten fragile ecosystems and disrupt an important habitat for migratory bird species along Albania's Adriatic coastline.

Environmental groups have also raised concerns about the long-term impact of tourism infrastructure on the surrounding protected landscape.

Luxury tourism plans under scrutiny

The proposed development, valued at an estimated $4.6 billion, has been linked to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner through investment plans involving the coastal resort.

Separate proposals also envision transforming Sazan Island, a former military installation from Albania's communist era, into a high-end tourist destination.

Supporters of the investment argue that it could boost tourism and economic growth, while critics contend that the environmental costs and approval process require far greater public scrutiny.

As demonstrations continue, the project has become a focal point in Albania's wider political debate over sustainable development, environmental protection and government transparency.
