AirTrunk plans $30 billion investment to expand India’s data centre infrastructure
Australian data centre operator AirTrunk has announced plans to invest approximately $30 billion in India by 2030, underscoring the country’s growing importance as a global technology and artificial intelligence hub.
The investment is expected to support the development of up to five gigawatts of new data centre capacity across key Indian markets. The project reflects increasing international confidence in India’s digital economy and its rapidly expanding demand for cloud services, artificial intelligence applications, and advanced computing infrastructure.
AirTrunk, headquartered in Sydney and backed by major international investors, recently strengthened its presence in India through strategic acquisitions and infrastructure development initiatives. The company’s current pipeline already includes large-scale projects in major metropolitan areas such as Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad, which are emerging as important centres for digital services and technology innovation.
Industry experts view India as one of the fastest-growing data centre markets in the world. Rising internet usage, digital transformation across industries, e-commerce growth, and the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies are driving unprecedented demand for data storage and processing capabilities.
Company executives highlighted that global competition for artificial intelligence investment is intensifying. Investors increasingly seek markets that offer regulatory clarity, efficient infrastructure development processes, and long-term policy stability. India’s efforts to attract foreign investment through supportive policies and incentives have contributed to its growing appeal among international technology firms.
The expansion of data centre infrastructure is also expected to generate economic benefits, including job creation, increased foreign direct investment, and stronger support for digital innovation. Modern data centres play a crucial role in powering cloud platforms, financial services, telecommunications networks, and AI-driven applications used by businesses and consumers.
As governments and companies worldwide accelerate investments in digital infrastructure, India is positioning itself as a strategic destination for the next generation of technology development. The planned investment by AirTrunk highlights the country's ambition to become a leading global centre for data processing, artificial intelligence, and digital services.
Analysts believe that continued investment in energy supply, connectivity, and skilled workforce development will be essential to sustaining India's momentum in the rapidly evolving digital economy.
