Aditya Birla Group plans $1.26 billion expansion of Odisha alumina refinery
India’s Aditya Birla Group has unveiled plans for a major expansion of its alumina production capacity in eastern India, with a proposed additional investment of $1.26 billion in its Kansariguda refinery project in Odisha.
The expansion, to be carried out through group company Hindalco Industries, aims to triple the refinery’s production capacity to 3 million metric tons per year, according to a statement from the Odisha state government.
The investment would bring the total planned spending on the refinery project to approximately $2.1 billion, reinforcing the group’s long-term commitment to India’s aluminum value chain.
Hindalco to strengthen alumina production capacity
The Kansariguda facility is expected to become a key component of Hindalco Industries’ strategy to secure raw material supplies and expand its presence in the aluminum sector.
Alumina, the primary raw material used in aluminum production, plays a crucial role in industries ranging from transportation and construction to renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.
By increasing domestic refining capacity, the project is aligned with India’s broader industrial ambitions to enhance local production capabilities and reduce reliance on external supply chains.
Odisha emerges as a strategic industrial hub
The planned expansion further highlights Odisha’s growing importance as a center for mineral-based industries in India. The state, known for its significant mineral resources, has attracted major investments in metals, mining and manufacturing.
Local authorities said the project would contribute to industrial development while creating new economic opportunities in the region.
The expansion is also expected to support India’s rising demand for aluminum, driven by infrastructure development, electrification projects and clean energy technologies.
Aditya Birla Group accelerates metals growth strategy
The announcement reflects Aditya Birla Group’s continued focus on expanding its global metals operations. Through Hindalco Industries, the conglomerate has built a significant presence across the aluminum supply chain, from mining and refining to finished products.
As global demand for lightweight and recyclable materials increases, investments in aluminum production capacity are gaining strategic importance for manufacturers worldwide.
The Odisha refinery expansion positions Hindalco to strengthen its role in meeting future demand while supporting India’s industrial growth objectives.
