5.2-magnitude earthquake hits Xinjiang, no casualties reported
A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County in China’s northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region early Wednesday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
The tremor occurred in the early hours of the day, with the epicenter located in the mountainous county near China’s western borders. The quake was recorded at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers.
Initial assessments indicated no casualties or material damage. Local authorities confirmed that transportation systems, communication networks, and the electricity grid were not affected by the earthquake.
Officials also reported that daily life and production activities are continuing as normal, and no emergency measures have been activated so far.
Xinjiang lies in a seismically active zone where earthquakes of varying intensity are periodically recorded, though most cause limited impact due to low population density in affected areas.
